I looked around for the best deal on a new PC when mine died, and thought I found it at Best Buy.
Now, believe me, I have no problems asking lots of questions, but the trick is knowing the right questions to ask; if you don’t, don’t bet on the young folk at any electronics store to fill in that gap for you.
Here’s what I learned the hard way. Do you know the difference between a 32 bit and a 64 bit system? I didn’t know that such a difference even existed. And of course, the young man selling me the computer didn’t mention that it was a great price because it’s a 64 bit, which sounds much better than a 32 bit, right?! In any other world but computer land, a higher number means somehow better, yes?
Nope. Computer manufacturers are phasing out 64 bit computers….don’t know why, but I feel confident it has something to do with that being the last year that Boomers were born…hey, I’m not paranoid… These are being replaced with the much younger sounding 32 bit systems.
Why would we care, you ask? Well I did just ask just that, and found out that all that nifty software, and stuff you want to add onto your system as a download, is now being made for 32 bit systems. In order to get them for those “old” 64 bit PC’s, you must special order them. It may not cost you extra (sometimes it does) but it sure is a huge pain in the keester, as you now have to contact that provider’s customer service team and go through not only the 15 minutes on hold, but the somewhat convoluted process of downloading these apparent dinosaurs.
So, remember, 32 bit is in, 64 bit is ever so on its way out.
You have been officially alerted…
