Boomers Hurting the Employment Market?!

Well...that's what some folks (read kids) think, because we intend to keep working past the usual retirement age.

Or for some of us, we have to keep working past the age we hoped we'd be able to retire, thanks to a decade of interesting investment strategies on Wall Street, even more interesting home-financing strategies on our part, and gobs of government debt.

The rationale behind this somewhat fantastic notion, is that 78M people retiring will open up a lot of jobs!

In fact, according to research by the Pew Research Center Populations Projections, every day  about 10K Boomers reach traditional retirement age (65).  That's an astounding number, but given, as noted above, that there's approximately 78M of us, it will take a full 19 years for all Boomers to get to that age.  So, 78M jobs won't remain filled tomorrow because we didn't retire.

"But," the kids say, "if you guys would retire like you're supposed to, like your parents did, at 65 (or better yet, younger if you can work it out, please...), hey, that's about 10K jobs A DAY that would open up for us!"

Ah, but do you plan to support those of us who need to keep working if we leave those jobs?  Or do you really have the chops for the jobs in which those of us who want to continue working are remaining?  Because they do require decades of experience and highly advanced skill-sets that, well, take decades to cultivate.

When you decide, let us know.  We'll be here.
